Poetry & Prose

My woman with her forest-fire hair / With her heat-lightning thoughts / With her hourglass waist /... With her teeth of white mouse footprints on the white earth / With her tongue of polished amber and glass....

Night Noises

I hear beams creaking in the attic,

a cat jumping to the floor,

distant whirring sounds in the summer,

maybe a flurry of barking from fretful dogs

or the intermittent rush of cars on the interstate.

Sometimes there's heavy rain pounding above,

thunder shaking the house and the sky,

burning logs shifting in the wood stove,

the old refrigerator humming in the kitchen
